PUTRAJAYA — The year 2018 has been declared the Empowerment of Women Year to reduce poverty and improve the well-being of the family, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
She said various programmes and efforts would be planned to develop and empower women entrepreneurs, especially housewives, single mothers and women in general who are eligible under the lowest household income group (B40) category.
“The government has implemented various economic empowerment and poverty eradication programmes such as Development of Women Entrepreneurship Initiatives (DeWI), Women Site Women Bazaar (LaWa), 1Azam, and Two-Year Exit Entrepreneurship (2YEP) that continues to provide direct welfare assistance and facilities to improve themselves and get out of the poverty trap.
“One of the recommendations suggested to help this group is to focus on improving their income and providing business training and aid for those interested in entrepreneurship,” she told reporters after launching the National Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Malaysia (NAWEM)-L’OREAL: “Women In Business” project here today.
Rohani said the perception that single mothers, who are the main target group of entrepreneurial projects, often failed in business ventures needed to be discarded.
As of June this year, she said, 85,204 single mothers are registered under her ministry.
“I will ask my officers to categorise single mothers according to their age and skills to provide programmes according to their talent to start a business or in improving their business,” she said.
She said the programme, initiated by NAWEM in a strategic collaboration with L’OREAL Malaysia, was very timely as it would help women, especially those in the B40 category, to generate income through the sale of L’OREAL products.
Earlier Rohani, in her speech, said the national level Women’s Day celebration, which is normally held on Aug 25 every year, has been postponed to Sept 4 due to the 29th SEA Games and ninth ASEAN Para Games (KL2017).
