5-star Keldon Johnson gets his offer

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Keldon Johnson waited patiently for a scholarship offer from Kentucky basketball and the 5-star Class of 2018 wing finally got one during an unofficial visit to campus on Tuesday, a source familiar with his recruitment told SEC Country.

The 6-foot-5 Oak Hill Academy star is ranked as high as the No. 2 shooting guard and No. 11 overall prospect in the country by 247Sports. He was a standout on the Nike AAU circuit, averaging 19.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 23 games this spring and summer.

Johnson told SEC Country in July that Kansas, UCLA, Oregon, Texas, Maryland, Georgetown, Virginia, Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Memphis were recruiting him hardest — but that Kentucky’s interest was picking up and he held out hope of earning an offer.

Assistant coach Joel Justus was the point man for the Wildcats and told Johnson to “just keep competing, keep playing hard and just play my game — don’t get out of character,” the player said. “I think if I play my game, they’ll recognize what I can do.”

Johnson said earlier this summer that he would stay patient and, should the offer come, UK would definitely make his short list.

“Legendary program, great coaching staff,” he said, “a coaching staff that gets you ready for the league.”

Johnson makes nine players in the Class of 2018 with UK offers — not counting Marvin Bagley, who moved up to 2017 and committed to Duke recently. The others are small forwards R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cameron Reddish, power forward Bol Bol and point guards Immanuel Quickley, Darius Garland and Quentin Grimes. All are 5-star, top-25 overall prospects.

The Wildcats still do not have a commitment in this class.
