Airbnb-style lettings ‘have no effect’ on housing crisis

Trinity economics professor Dr Ronan Lyons said it was important to understand the “relative scale” of the short-term lettings impact on housing.

He told a Housing, Community, Planning and Local Government committee yesterday that 10pc of houses in Dublin were vacant and this was “twice the vacancy rate that would be considered healthy” for a city.

“If you can imagine if there was no short-term lettings, the landlord would still charge the same rent,” Prof Lyons said.

John McCafferty, CEO with housing group Threshold, told the committee the real problem remained with the “abject lack of social housing since the 1980s”, coupled with the huge increase in rents in the private rental market.
