The Spanish club were expected to bring in fresh blood after the departure of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain
BARCELONA was under fresh scrutiny from the Spanish media on Saturday after failing to make any deadline day signings.
Nou Camp chiefs were criticised for their inability to lure either Philippe Coutinho and Angel Di Maria to Spain.
Barca have been desperate to bring in new recruits after seeing Neymar leave the club to join Paris Saint-Germain for a world record fee.
Officials at the club saw Coutinho as an ideal replacement for his compatriot and have been chasing the Brazil international all summer.
While Di Maria was seen as plan B in the case any deal for the former Inter Milan play-maker broke down.
However, with both respective teams refusing to sanction transfers, Barcelona bosses’ failings were highlighted in the press.
Catalan news outlets Sport and Mundo Deportivo showed no mercy in their slamming of the four-time Champions League winners.
Mundo Deportivo, whose headline read: “Couti-no”, ran an exclusive on the Coutinho saga, saying talks for the Brazilian reached an impasse after Liverpool demanded £146.5m.
The newspaper also claimed that the Reds wanted him loaned back until January.
As Barca were reluctant to to match Liverpool’s asking price they turned to their plan B, Di Maria, but they were unable to reach an agreement with his club.
While, Sport’s headlined: “Cero Fichajes”, which translate to “Zero Transfers”, in bold yellow texts.
There was also confusion around the club’s decision to allow Munir El Haddadi to be loaned to Alaves for the season.
