Canton volleyball feeding off energy, new leadership – Sports – Journal Star

Canton’s volleyball team isn’t fazed by loud gyms, in fact they try to match the noise and excitement. It’s one of the focuses of first-year head coach Felicia Appell.

“One thing that I’ve been trying to change is building that confidence and that energy and just show the passion in the games,” she said. “We always try to have a positive attitude and that comes from everywhere, coaches athletes and fans.”

It’s working. The Little Giants have already matched last year’s win total of five. They finished 5-27 last year and enter play 5-10 on Tuesday.

Junior hitter Cassidy Locke has earned all-tournament honors at the Limestone Classic and the Fulton County Tournament.

“Cassidy is one of our captains and she brings a lot of energy to our team and through that energy everyone kind of thrives,” Appell said. “We’re a team that thrives in loud environments and (off) energy.”

After sickness forced senior Abby Swope into the starting lineup one night, she made the most of the opportunity.

“Abby has really stepped it up,” Appell said. “She was throwing herself on the floor for everything, so she’s really just shown that hustle and leadership going after anything and everything she can.”
