College Sports: Will Texas Tech have the worst defense in the league again? Can Nic Shimonek become Patrick Mahomes 2.0?

Chuck Carlton, Big 12 football beat writer for and The Dallas Morning News, answered questions about the league in a live chat Wednesday. Here are some of the highlights:

Will Texas Tech have the worst defense in the league again, or will we see some improvement?

Carlton: You would expect some improvement with Texas Tech defensive coordinator now in his third season bringing some continuity. Plus, it’s just as hard to stay bad in something as it is to be good. Just by the law of averages, Tech has to start improving, right? The opener against Eastern Washington will be a good barometer. EWU reached the FCS semifinals last season and play a real high level of offense.

Can Nic Shimonek lead the Big 12 in passing like his predecessor in Patrick Mahomes?

Carlton: Maybe. It could be hard with Baker Mayfield and Mason Rudolph in the league as well. But Shimonek should post impressive numbers in Kliff Kingsbury’s quarterback-friendly offense.

What does Texas Tech have to do this season for Kliff Kingsbury to stick around as its head coach? Can he afford another losing season?

Carlton: Probably not. There has to be progress. I don’t know if 6-6 would be good enough. Best guess: if Tech goes 7-5 and the defense shows some improvement, Kingsbury probably gets another year.
