David Davis and Michel Barnier hold first talks ‘on UK soil’ over sumptuous lunch of Scottish scallops and British lamb

David Davis will wrap up the first substantive rounds of Brexit talks in Brussels on Thursday with a sumptuous lunch to be symbolically staged in the UK ambassador’s residence, it has emerged.

Mr Davis, the Brexit secretary, will discuss the progress – or lack thereof – of the talks with his counterpart Michel Barnier over a lunch of Scottish scallops and British lamb.

The unexpected move will be taken as a concession from the European side which has driven both the agenda of the talks and its location in the airless warren that that is the European Commission’s headquarters in Brussels.

The meeting will, in effect, be the first substantive exchange to take place on Brexit on ‘British soil’ which has been taken a recognition on the British side that the Brexit talks are a negotiation between equals – not a position always shared by the EU side.

Mr Davis will be joined by his top officials…
