Empowering the consumer through ‘power’ apps

Minister for power, coal, renewable energy and mines Piyush Goyal said the apps are key to the government’s mission to provide good quality, reliable and affordable 24×7 supply. The apps — Merit, Vidyut Pravah, Garv, Urja Mitra and Surya Mitra — are all free.

REAL COST OF ELECTRICITY
1.Consumers can find out whether states are charging them a fair price.

2.Merit app gives users information on whether states are actually giving priority to cheaper sources of power. Often they don’t do this.

3.Consumers can compare prices at which states purchase electricity and supply.

4.Prices of electricity in the spot market for every state are updated on a real-time basis on Vidyut Pravah app.

HOW LONG WILL YOU BE IN THE DARK?
1.Consumers can be prepared for power outages through the power ministry’s apps.

2.Urja Mitra provides real-time information on power outages.

3.Urja Nitra also gives information on scheduled and ongoing power outages.

4.Consumers can also get alerts on duration and cause of scheduled outages.

5.Over 110 million messages related to outages have been sent to consumers since the launch of Urja Mitra.

ACTUAL POWER AVAILABILITY
1.States may complain of power shortages, finding a way to provide electricity at higher prices among other things.

2.Vidyut Pravah lets consumers question states if they face power outages even when surplus power is available.

3.Consumers can also check the power supply in their area through Garv.

4.Merit provides data on individual state portfolios — power generation, demand met, sourcewise purchase of electricity and marginal costs —on a daily basis.

I’VE GOT A COMPLAINT, OR TWO!
1.Consumers have an option to lodge complaints with power distribution companies through Garv, which is aimed at tracking rural and household electrification.

2.Urja Mitra provides information on power outages, timely release of connections and addressing complaints.

3.Till June this year, 10.1% of 1.4 million consumer plaints were left to be resolved.

SUNSHINE
1.The power ministry reaches the enduser of solar power through Surya Mitra.

2.The department trains personnel to provide installation, repair and management services of solar products to consumers.

3.About 11,000 individuals have been trained under the initiative in last two years. Of them, 65% have received full-time employment and remaining might be self-employed or entrepreneurs.
