Former Kentucky Wildcats forward and fan favorite Derek Willis will have the chance to earn a spot playing on the international stage this summer.
Willis, who finished his career at Kentucky in March, is one of 16 players on the training camp roster announced on Monday by USA Basketball for the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup tournament.
The AmeriCup, formerly called the FIBA Americas Championship, will feature 12 countries from North America, South America, Central America, and the Carribbean.
Team USA will hold training camp on the campus of the University of Houston from Aug. 17-24, and head coach Jeff Van Gundy will have to narrow the roster down to 12 players by the time the team heads to South America on the 24th.
Team USA will begin group play on Aug. 28 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Semifinal and medal round games will then be played on Cordoba, Argentina.
Willis, who signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Pistons earlier this summer, will be one of a handful of forwards on the preliminary roster. During his career with the Wildcats, he played in 103 games, averaging 5.4 points and 3.4 rebounds. He also shot 39.9 percent from 3-point range and 80.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Team USA last participated in the tournament in 2007, going 10-0 and winning the gold medal and qualifying for a spot in the Beijing Olympics.
