Hudson Valley Unions Start Apprentice Recruitment Drives in August

LARCHMONT, NY — Four Hudson Valley unions are starting apprentice recruitment drives in August. They’re looking for people interested in being electricians, skilled construction craft laborers and carpenters. The drives vary in the length of the application period, how and when to apply, and who is eligible.

Apprenticeship Training Committee of Local Union #3, will conduct a recruitment from Aug. 21 through Sept. 1, 2017 for 50 electrician apprentices. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

Rondout Electric, Inc. will conduct a recruitment from Aug. 21 through Sept. 1, 2017 for three electrician apprentices.

Laborers Local Union #235 will conduct a longer recruitment — Aug. 28, 2017 through Aug. 24, 2018 — for three skilled construction craft laborer apprentices.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters also has a year-long drive: it will conduct its drive for four carpenter apprentices Aug. 31, 2017 – Aug. 30, 2018.

Apprentice programs registered with the New York Department of Labor — and these are — must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.

Laborers Local Union No. 235

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Laborers, Local Union #235, will conduct a recruitment from Aug. 28, 2017 through Aug. 24, 2018 for three skilled construction craft laborer apprentices.

The three openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions, the Capital District and Hudson Valley regions. This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #235, 41 Knollwood Road, Elmsford, NY, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during therecruitment period.
The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of a laborer.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Westchester-Fairfield Joint Electrical Apprenticeship Training Committee, Local Union #3

The recruitment period is from from Aug. 21, 2017 through Sept. 1, 2017 for 50 electrician apprentices. Applications can be obtained by sending a registered letter to: WFJEATC, P. O. Box 408, White Plains, NY 10602. The registered letter must contain the applicant’s name and address including zip code (please print). The request letters will be accepted for 10 business days or until 1,000 registered letters have been received, whichever occurs first. Please do not include any documents or money with your registered letter. It is the responsibility of the applicant to retain the post office receipt for the registered letter.

Requests for applications will be accepted by REGISTERED MAIL ONLY. Requests for applications received by any other means, including any other mail classifications, will not be accepted. Registered letters requesting an application must not be postmarked earlier than Aug. 21, 2017, but no later than September 1, 2017. All registered letters postmarked Aug. 21, 2017 will be honored with an application even if the number of letters received exceeds the 1,000 limit.

If you receive an application, there is a non-refundable application fee of $25. Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need. Completed applications must be mailed to WFJEATC, 200 Bloomingdale Road, White Plains, NY 10605 and postmarked no later than Oct. 13, 2017.

The WFJEATC requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old as of September 1, 2017.
  • Must have a state-accredited high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC), including successful completion of one year of algebra or one year of High School Regents math. An official transcript will be required upon application.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a complete physical examination by a physician, at the committee’s expense, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be a resident, of at least two years, within the Greater New York Metropolitan area (within a 60-mile radius of White Plains, NY).
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to operate company vehicles.
  • Must take and pass the electrical trades aptitude test.

Rondout Electric, Inc.

For the Rondout recruitment, Aug. 21 through Sept. 1, 2017, applications can be obtained and submitted at Rondout Electric, Inc., 225 Upper North Road, Highland NY, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every weekday, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to drive company owned vehicles on public roads.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund will conduct a recruitment from Aug. 31, 2017 through Aug. 30, 2018 for four carpenter apprentices.

Applications must be obtained in person at the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.every Thursday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants should be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test at the time of application.
The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide valid photo identification, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which may include:
    • Lifting and carrying objects over 50 pounds.
    • Climbing and working off of scaffolds and ladders at various heights.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Standing, stooping, and kneeling for prolonged periods of time.
    • Following established safety rules and regulations, and maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
    • Shaping and cutting materials using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
    • Building or repairing cabinets, doors, framework, floors, and other wooden fixtures using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
    • Erecting scaffolding and ladders.
    • Installing structures and fixtures using hand tools and power tools.
  • Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of Zone 11, which includes the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites throughout the Hudson Valley and related instruction classes.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must participate in an interview, if selected.
  • Must attend related instruction at an Empire State Carpenters Regional Training Facility for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
