What’s the stereotypical image of a police station? Dirty aisles and paan-smeared walls where visitors bear the stench to meet those behind the bars? A new police station, at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, not just changes this, but can also be converted into a war room!
Recently launched by Amulya Patnaik, Commissioner of Police Delhi, this first-ever hi-tech police station in the Capital has awe-inspiring features; including walls with thoughtful verses about life lessons, a child-friendly room, and a conference room that can be converted into a war room, when the need arises.

“Airport is one place where a lot of private and government organisations work together. There is the Intelligence Bureau, Customs, CISF, Air Force, Cabinet Secretariat and a small unit of National Security Guard (NSG). There are also private organisations and ground staff at agencies who operate at the airport. Delhi Police works as an interface. We become the contingent command centre. Therefore, we have set-up a conference room that can be transformed into a war room with the help of Security Operations Command Centre and Airport Operations Command Centre,” says Sanjay Bhatia, DCP, IGI Airport.
Talk about the quotes written on the walls of lockups in the station and Bhatia explains, “This is to bring positivity among the culprits. Also, we have not given any religious inclination to the quotes.”
The visitors lounge is another highlight at this police station. “Generally, there’s no place for visitors to wait in police stations, but we have a visitors’ room with a coffee machine, too, so people can feel comfortable,” says Deepak Saini, SHO.

The initiative, according to the officers, was the need of the hour as lot of tourists visit the station every day. “We hope to send out a positive image of a police station in India. With all basic facilities, this one will help build a better image of our country,” says Bhatia.
What’s more? This one also has an IO room. And, the food in the mess is healthy and tasty. “We have a fixed menu for the whole week,” adds Bhatia.
