Andrew Little says he stepped down for the good of the Labour Party.
And the man who was leader until just this morning, has admitted its dismal polling hurt him personally.
Mr Little said it was a judgement call to make way for Jacinda Ardern.
He told Rachel Smalley he had to take responsibility for the party’s campaign failings, to improve Labour’s chances at the election.
“I was concerned that we were leading with day after day a story that was being told, we were down in the dumps, we couldn’t recover and something had to break that.”
Mr Little says he hopes to continue working for the party in some capacity.
