Muskingum University’s Katie Shamel, a 2014 graduate of Indian Valley High School, recently was selected to be a member of the USA women’s lacrosse team.
Shamel is a member of the Muskingum University women’s lacrosse team and has finished second in the Ohio Athletic Conference for saves for the Muskies for two seasons.
USA Athletes International gives individuals an opportunity to travel abroad and compete at a high level while getting to experience a foreign culture. Muskingum University women’s lacrosse head coach Taryn Burkholder nominated Shamel for the position.
Shamel traveled to Berlin and Prague and participated on the USA team as a goalie.
Kelsey Van Alstyne, currently the head coach at Slippery Rock University, and Becca Lampson, an assistant coach at Colby College, guided the USA team to second place in the championship game of the Berlin Open against the Czech National Team.
The team then traveled to Prague for the Prague Cup and lost in the final again to the Czech National Team.
Shamel, a daughter of Chris and Melissa Shamel of Tuscarawas, is studying athletic training. She is currently serving in a clinic rotation at Muskingum University with volleyball.
