Magazine Street shooting suspect arrested, NOPD said

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an afternoon shooting on Magazine Street on Friday (Aug. 25) that injured three men, including the suspected perpetrator who was injured when one of the victims returned his gunfire, New Orleans police said Saturday.

New Orleans police identified the suspect as James Alexander.

Authorities accuse Alexander of fighting with an unidentified 24-year-old man before pulling a gun and firing at another victim, identified only as a 20-year-old man.  The second victim produced a gun of his own and fired back at Alexander, according to an NOPD news release.

Alexander and the 20-year-old fled the scene and were later taken to an area hospital in a private vehicle. The 24-year-old victim, who witnesses say sustained gunshots to his lower back or buttocks, was taken to the hospital by ambulance, according to police.

The man’s co-workers were able to pull him inside after he was shot, according to witnesses. They said the man was shot while sitting on a bench outside of the salon and day spa.

The shooting was reported by police about 4:30 p.m. Witnesses in the area said they heard at least 14 gunshots.
