Man held with illegal foreign currency at Dhaka airport

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has detained a Dubai-bound man carrying illegal foreign currency worth Tk2,546,804 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday.

The detainee is Md Osman, 44, a resident of Pashchim Gujra village under Raojan upazila in Chittagong.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of CIID kept their eyes on the passenger whom they later arrested at the airport around 12:45am, CIID Director General Dr Moinul Khan said.

“He was carrying 110,150 Saudi Riyal; 1,580 UAE Dirham and 1,000 Oman Riyal in his luggage. We discovered that the person had travelled from Bangladesh to Dubai seven times in 2017,” he added.

According to the Foreign Currency Control Act and Customs Act, carrying foreign currency without previous notice is illegal.

In the initial interrogation, Osman confessed he was carrying the money to purchase contraband items.
