Westbrook’s Matthew Harrison had his first taste of American show business when he recently went to New York and Orlando to show talent scouts what he is made of.

They liked what they saw.

The Crawford College North Coast matric pupil was one of the lucky few to have earned a golden ticket to audition in front of American agents and casting directors.

Already, he has been offered a scholarship from the New York film Academy and has received call backs from various model and talent agencies.

“I entered as many categories as I could, including monologue (where he made top 10), film scene, TV commercial, creative and fashion runway. The scholarship is an absolute dream and I plan to take it up next year, doing either a course in film making or acting for film,” said the 17-year-old Harrison.

He described his first trip overseas as awesome.

“New York was super busy and overwhelming. I actually fainted in a pizza shop and woke up in an ambulance.

“I think the busy day and the buzzing city was just too much. Orlando was much more spacious, but really hot!”

The group of talented South African youngsters stayed in Times Square in New York and even went to a Broadway musical – Kinky Boots.

In Orlando, they stayed in the Disney resort, went on all the Universal Studio rides and of course did some work in between.

“We did a showcase with people from Australia, the UK and America which was great because they were all so talented and I made lots of friends I still chat to on WhatsApp.”

Back home, Harrison is preparing to write his trials exams and after matric, he hopes to go back to America to learn more and get a feel for the life of lights, camera, action.
