Free lecture Thursday at Montana Tech
Zac Perry will give a talk titled “The Gem of the City: Restoration of the Reed College Canyon within Urban Portland’’ at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, in Montana Tech’s CBB 101.
The Reed College Canyon is a 28-acre headwater forest with a spring-fed pond that feeds a tributary of the Willamette River. Prior to urban settlement, it supported salmon spawning. Decades of neglect and abuse resulted in overgrowth of invasive species and loss of biological diversity.
Perry graduated from Oregon State University with degrees in Horticultural Science and Botany. After finalizing his M.S. thesis in 1999, Zac returned to Portland to help Reed College create a restoration strategy to rebuild the headwater forest.
