North Somerset Council has fought off claims it is profiting from its civil parking enforcement (CPE), insisting it is not a ‘money-making scheme’ despite raking in £138,000 in three months.

The council took control of parking enforcement from Avon and Somerset Constabulary in April, with wardens patrolling Weston-super-Mare’s streets for the first time in 20 years.

But despite collecting nearly £150,000 in fines, the council says it is not making money from CPE, and vowed surplus cash will be used to improve road networks.

A council spokesman said: “You have to take into account set-up costs and running costs.

“It is anticipated the scheme will be self-financing with any surplus at the end of the year going into local transport schemes and road improvements. It is too early to say whether there will be a surplus.

“This is not a money-making scheme – it’s about improving parking to ease congestion, leading to a higher turnover of parking spaces making it easier for people to get about and park and improving access for emergency vehicles.”

Many people took to social media to share their view.

Debbie Cannon wrote “It is just a money-making exercise, nothing to do with safety. Parking wardens should be outside of schools every single day but they won’t because instead of using them as a deterrent and making the area safe, they concentrate on people that are 10 minutes late for a parking meter.”

Kieron Osmond said: “Weston shops are dying because of the council I think this is probably the nail in the coffin with the parking. I have lived in Weston all my life and in the last 10 years you could probably count on one hand how many times I’ve been shopping in Weston.”

Suzy Mckirgan commented: “I really don’t understand the vitriol against parking fines. If you want to park in town find a designated parking bay and buy a ticket for the amount of time you need.

“What is so wrong about that? People have such a sense of entitlement these days and think the rules do not apply to them.”

Dee Allsup commented: “I agree if you are parked illegal you should be fined but this crew of jobsworths are full of their own power. If they had a heart as well as a big head they would not be sticking tickets on vehicles for being a few minutes over time.”
