Team USA look to defend the Solheim Cup on home soil this week, having snatched a dramatic victory in an incident-filled tournament two years ago.
Juli Inkster’s side will be hoping for back-to-back victories for the first time since 2009 when they take on Annika Sorenstam’s European team at Des Moines Golf and Country Club, following on from their infamous 14.5-13.5 win in 2015.
The USA overturned the largest final-day deficit to dominate the Sunday singles and take the title in Germany, although the event was marred by a row over the concession of a putt early on the final morning.
Europe shared the spoils in the Friday foursomes and moved 5-3 ahead after a weather-affected fourball session was concluded early on Saturday, before extending their advantage by winning three of the four matches in the morning session.
The Saturday fourballs were suspended due to bad light and finished on Sunday morning, where tempers flared in the game involving Suzann Pettersen, Charley Hull, Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome.
With the match all square at the 17th, Lee picked her ball up when she thought her 16-inch putt had been conceded by the European team – only for Pettersen to suggest that wasn’t the case.
Europe were awarded the hole and Hull birdied the next to give the hosts the point, with the Englishwoman and Lee reduced to tears during heated discussions between the two teams.
The win helped the home side take a 10-6 lead into the singles, where the USA bounced back to claim 8.5 points on Sunday afternoon and claim an unlikely victory.
