Two people were wounded during a shooting Friday afternoon on Magazine Street, and a man was later arrested.
A large contingent of New Orleans police officers cordoned off a stretch of Magazine near St. Mary Street about 3:40 p.m.
Several witnesses said they heard roughly 15 shots fired and saw two men injured.
Samantha Lamb was working at the Garden District Pub when she heard the gunfire.
“It was at least 15 shots,” she said. “At first I didn’t know what it was, but then I made everyone in the bar move quickly to the back.”
A patron at the bar, Garret Gorsuch, said he heard the gunfire and saw a man who had been shot sitting in the middle of the street. The man then pulled himself across the street and was picked up and put in a gold car by a woman, who drove off with the injured man, Gorsuch said.
Another man, a friend of Gorsuch’s and Lamb’s who works as a hairstylist at the nearby Stardust Salon, was sitting outside smoking a cigarette when he was caught in the crossfire and wounded, Lamb said.
“He’s doing fine,” Lamb said of the man, who was taken by ambulance to a hospital but did not appear to have been seriously injured.
Another stylist at Stardust said an employee of the Tasting Room restaurant heard the shots and went outside to help pull the injured man to safety.
Several people said the man taken away in a gold car appeared to have been the intended target. Police have not confirmed those accounts.
Bystander Matthew McGaha was sitting outside when he saw a bullet ricochet off a nearby gate, he said.
“I saw the man scoot across the street after he was shot,” McGaha said, adding that he saw another man wearing a white shirt run up St. Mary Street immediately after the gunfire broke out.
“It was crazy. It’s the middle of the day,” McGaha said.
Police said Friday night that James Alexander, 25, had been arrested and booked as the perpetrator.
