Texas Longhorns Alecia Sutton and Joyner Holmes helped Team USA advance to the semifinals of the FIBA U19 World Cup as they defeated France 78-51 in Udine, Italy Friday.
Holmes scored 14 points to go with six rebounds while Sutton pitched in seven points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Sutton earned the start and played 24 minutes as Holmes was on the court for 22 minutes of play.
“At first we started off slow on defense, but after the half we picked it up a little,” Sutton said. “I came out with energy, and I wanted to bring energy for the team. We had been coming out slow after halftime, so I tried to tell them we needed to bring more energy and just pick it up on defense.”
The win makes it nine straight times the U19 team has qualified for the semifinals. Team USA will take on Japan Saturday at 2 p.m. Canada and Russia will face off in the other semifinal on Saturday. All teams that advanced are undefeated at 5-0 at the tournament.
Team USA held France to just 30 percent shooting on the night and shot 48 percent.
