Syracuse, N.Y. — After struggling in USA East Coast’s first game in Spain, Syracuse forward Matthew Moyer showed his versatility in the team’s second game on its four-game tour.
Moyer, a 6-foot-8 redshirt freshman, scored 13 points as USA East Coast trounced the Spanish Select team 102-67 on Thursday in Madrid. Moyer also had six rebounds, four assists and a steal in the victory.
USA East Coast is a collection of college players put together by Lycoming (Pa.) College coach Guy Rancourt each summer for a four-game tour of Europe.
In its first game on this year’s tour, USA East Coast stunned another Spanish squad 97-95 on a last-second 3-pointer by Notre Dame’s Rex Pflueger. Moyer had just five points and three rebounds in that game before fouling out.
Moyer bounced back on Thursday. His 13 points were the second-highest total on the team. Notre Dame’s Austin Torres led the U.S. squad with 14 points and eight rebounds.
USA East Coast scored the first 11 points of the game and was never seriously threatened after that. USA East Coast will be in for a much tougher challenge on Friday as it faces the Venezuelan National Team.
USA East Coast will wrap up its trip with a game against Japan on Saturday.
