TRUJILLO, Peru – The Texas Longhorns continued their successful 2017 season in track and field this weekend as rising sophomore George Patrick claimed golf for Team USA at the Pan American Junior Championships in the decathlon.

Patrick put together a dominating performance over his 10 events to tally a score of 7,514, more than 300 points better than second place. He opened the meet on Friday with the top performance in the field in two of the first five events. The first day of action closed with a new personal record in the 400 meters to set the tone for Saturday.

This morning, Patrick carried that momentum into the final five events as he posted the top mark in the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault and javelin. With a comfortable lead, Patrick was not forced to push himself in the final event. He finished fifth in the 1,500 meters but still managed to run a personal best in that event as he secured his win.

The gold medal closes Patrick’s season. He will now cheer on a future Texas teammate on Sunday when incoming freshman Tripp Piperi competes in the shot put for Team USA.

Fans can keep up with the action with results posted by the Pan Am Junior Games online. A link to the entries and results is posted on USATF.org in the USATF’s event homepage for the meet. Other links to the live stream via Facebook and Team USA rosters are available there as well.
