UDINE, Italy – Behind a strong defensive effort, the 2017 USA Women’s U19 World Cup Team knocked off France, 78-51, on Friday in the FIBA U19 World Cup Quarterfinals.

The United States (5-0) advances to its ninth consecutive U19 medal semifinal game, where it will face Japan (5-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. Also advancing to the medal semifinals are Canada (5-0) and Russia (5-0), who also will meet on Saturday.

Texas sophomore Joyner Holmes scored 14 points and brought down six rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Fellow Longhorn Alecia Sutton added seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 24 minutes in a starting role.

“At first, we started off slow on defense, but after the half, we picked it up a little,” Sutton said. “I came out with energy, and I wanted to bring energy for the team. We had been coming out slow after halftime, so I tried to tell them we needed to bring more energy and just pick it up on defense.”
