Texas Tech RB Da’Leon Ward back with team after academic issues

In July, no one was sure if Da’Leon Ward would play a snap for Texas Tech in 2017.

Ward ran into some academic issues, and missed all of fall camp. According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams, Ward is now back on the team.

According to Kingsbury, he might not make it back on the field immediately. Currently, he’s buried in the depth chart.

Getting Ward back might not change much for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are deep at running back, Justin Stockton has started games before, and Demarcus Felton received significant minutes last year. Desmond Nisby is another name that you might see more of. Nisby is 6’2 and weighs 240 pounds, and is extremely difficult to take down.

Ward rushed for 428 yards on 103 carries during his freshman year. He found the end zone for the pass-happy Red Raiders three times during the season. Texas Tech produced a 1,000 yard rusher in both 2014 and 2015. In 2016, Ward was the team’s leading rusher with a mere 428 yards. Last year was a rebuilding year for Texas Tech’s offensive line, but if they can piece that unit back together, they’ll have some serious weapons to work with in the backfield.
