UK must pay Brexit bill, says Angela Merkel – POLITICO

alan

Of course Angela – now about your 2% commitment/obligation to NATO when do you propose to honour that?

not sure about your 0.7% commitment to international development aid – any comment?

Thank you, Politico: good photo for once!! Indeed the amount of the bill may be open for discussion but there will be a bill to may. This is only fair.

“Boris Johnson, the British foreign secretary, said he did not “recognize” the €100 billion figure but added that “we should pay not a penny more, not a penny less, of what we think our legal obligations amount to.”

Fine. How about €99.99bn then?

Angela Merkel, as the German leader of the free world has made it very clear, Britain must pay up or face the consequences. I think stationing several divisions of German troops along the channel coast in France should get the message across to the Brits

@alan, nice deflection, still a deflection from the British long term commitments to the EU. There is no 2% commitment/obligation to Nato, this is not what was agreed in Wales at Nato summit 2015: Till 2022, there was a recommendation to lift Nato spending up to 2%, not earlier. That is in 5 years, not earlier. Also, this 2% number is very artificial, it would elevate German defence spending over the budget of Russia. So we might have a discussion about nuclear rearmament of Germany, to be very frank. Also, other measures are not included, e.g. refugee housing: We house millions of refugees of the failed wars of the US and their poodle, the UK, while they do nothing. Can not be that some start stupid wars and others clean up behind them, thanks, while the perpetrators are turning into right wing countries. You started the middle eastern wars with Iraq, you knocked down an order. That is your stupid war, you own it, with the consequences, Syria included. So you have to do much more than your proposed tent cities in Jordania. Otherwise, the next terror wave in 15-18 years will be assured by the next generation of young people grewing up in tent cities with no perspective.

Not going to happen unless we agree a FTA in parallel, & still won’t be the billions quoted in the media. Personally I think the talks will break down as the EU has miscalculated. The UK should just leave.

UK to Angela Merkel: pay the WW II reparations to Poland. Only then can Germany start talking on any Brexit bill. 🙂

we need to pay what we legally owe, as has been said for many months and to do that the EU must come up with an itemised bill that sets against each itemised figure the treaty or obligation it related to. At present it is an extremely vague and unsubstantiated invoice that no one here would accept on their behalf or that of their country.

As far as Germany goes, when will they be heavily fined for the car cartel, false emissions standards that has poisoned hundreds of thousands of EU citizens, the tens of billions owing from spending too little on defence, for breaking EU rules on budget surpluses and recompense for forcing other countries to accept their house guests?

Hmm. A deafening silence on all these fronts. The EU has truly become the private domain of Empress Merkel. Hypocrites.

The beggars brok a55 brits will pay, sooner or later. Friendly with an agreement or by law in front of the international court of justice.
The bill, by the way, has already increased by a 25%, almost what the pound loose on the ground in the last 2 years.

I’ve got a good one.

What’s the difference between a Prostitute and the European Union.

The prostitute stops screwing you once you’ve left the building.

I’ve calculated Paris is supposed to take 20,000 financial services jobs, Frankfurt 10,000, Luxemburg 10,000, Dublin 5,000 and Amsterdam 5,000.

More like 40 – your own people in the EU agencies in Canary Wharf don’t want to leave the bright lights of London.

Macron’s jealousy of London’s financial district will be your undoing.

What about VW’s financial obligations to UK diesel car owners due to the emissions scandal?
