UK’s battery industry is in a strong position

Sir, Your report “Mini car battery imports flag up British weak spot” (July 26), on BMW’s decision to import German batteries when it starts construction on the new electric mini, is too negative on the state of the UK battery industry. There is more battery manufacturing in the UK than is given credit for, but importantly where we have a strong position is in both intellectual property and technical know-how.

In the UK, companies are working collaboratively with manufacturers all around the world using our expertise to help the development of new battery products. While the physical manufacturing may, for strategic reasons, happen elsewhere, there is often still a huge amount of work done with UK companies.
