The U.S. women’s basketball team has announced its first training camp led by new head coach Dawn Staley. The camp will be held in Santa Barbara, California between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2. The camp will be the beginning of preparation for next year’s Women’s World Cup in Spain. The United States will look to make it three straight gold medals in the event.
Staley and USA basketball have not yet announced the camp roster. The dates potentially conflict with the WNBA Finals, so players from the two teams involved may be unable to attend.

Also the head coach at the University of South Carolina, Staley has had a storied career as both a player and coach. South Carolina won the NCAA national championship this past season under Staley’s leadership.
Staley will take the place of Geno Auriemma, the head coach at the University of Connecticut. Her assistant coaches will be Jeff Walz of Louisville, Michelle Clark-Heard of Western Kentucky, Jennifer Rizzotti of George Washington and Sue Semrau of Florida State. Staley previously served as an assistant coach under Auriemma.
