HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) – The Horseheads Board of Education has approved a tax rate decrease for residents of the school district.
At a special meeting Monday morning, the Board of Ed approved the 2017-18 tax warrant. They set the average tax rate at $17.54 per $1,000 of assessed value. That’s a 1.35% decrease from last year. The overall tax rate on a $100,000 home will decrease by about $24.
This is the second straight year the tax rate has decreased. The school district says the decrease is due to property growth in the district.
The tax rate is calculated using property assessments, as determined by assessors, and equalization rates, which are set by the state.
Later this month, the Board of Education will vote on presenting a capital referendum to voters. the capital project would include upgrading educational facilities and operational systems across the district over the next few years.
