Government denies multi-billion pound increase in deal for Chagos Islands – Channel 4 News

The Government has denied agreeing to double the amount it will pay Mauritius in a deal to keep control of a military base on the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean.

The Mauritian Prime Minister said Sir Keir Starmer had improved the terms of the deal, under which the UK will give up sovereignty over the islands in favour of Mauritius – but lease back the strategically important Diego Garcia military base. Sir Keir said national security could be at risk unless the deal was done.
