Pound Cake Man closes Clemson location, Greenville shop remains open
The Pound Cake Man bakery will close the Clemson storefront on Saturday, March 2.
The bakery announced the closing on Facebook Feb. 28.
Jeff Bennett, owner of Pound Cake Man had two locations in the Upstate. One is at 1628 E. North St. Suite 2 in Greenville, and the other is at 530 Old Greenville Highway Suite 2 in Clemson.
“Four years ago, we opened our storefront in Clemson, and while sales have been good, the expenses associated with running the business have been higher than expected,” Bennett said.
He says he has loved every minute of being in Clemson. “Our customers and staff are just amazing,” he said. “Over the past couple of days, customers have expressed sadness about the storefront location closing.”
Customer Johnny Wilson, 57, a Clemson native, said he was sad to see the business close. “I’m going to miss talking to workers in person and browsing their cake selection,” he said.
The Pound Cake Man bakery offers more than 100 flavors of whole-pound cakes and cupcakes. “Any favor idea, we can make it,” Bennett said.
Clemson residents can still purchase whole cakes, loaf cakes, and cupcakes online. Bennett will bake his sweet treats at his home. “We still offer pickup and delivery services at 115 Pleasant View Drive,” he said. “Customers must place their orders in advance, and they won’t be able to purchase cakes on the go.”
The bakery also has two food trucks with various pound cakes and cupcakes customers can buy at different locations around the city.
“I’m glad the family can still purchase their cakes,” customer Johnny Wilson said. “Red Velvet is my favorite.”
The permanent closure sign for the Clemson storefront location can be found taped to the door in the form of a typed letter.
“Unfortunately, things don’t always work out like you think they will,” Bennett said. “I may open another location in the future, but nothing is set in stone.”
