Dolton firefighters contended with a fire Wednesday morning at an industrial property in the village, but nobody was hurt, according to fire Chief Pete McCain.
He said the department responded at about 10:30 a.m. to 14059 Cottage Grove Ave., and firefighters “encountered heavy smoke and fire.”
The address had, according to public records, been the site of a scrap metal recycling business.
McCain said the property appeared “to be in transition,” and there were workers on the scene at the time of the fire who escaped unharmed.
He said there were wood pallets and scrap roofing material that were burning when firefighters arrived.
He said the cause of the fire was not yet known.
“It’s too early to tell,” McCain said. “Fortunately nobody was hurt.”
He said it took firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control, and that a mutual aid agreement brought other area fire departments to the scene.
