How being a mortgage adviser has taken me to Downing Street
Sarah Tucker’s desire to create a space for women advisers and help spread knowledge on mortgages and finance has seen her meet the chancellor and appear on morning television.
Sitting down with FT Adviser’s Amy Austin for a fireside chat, Sarah Tucker, director and founder of The Mortgage Mum, discussed why she set up her all-female brokerage and how she wants to help educate the next generation of savers.
Tucker explained she wanted to set up her own firm after seeing a gap in the market.
“When I entered the industry, it was male dominated, and the way in which female brokers worked wouldn’t have fit in with my life,” she said.
She explained going to people’s houses alone at night and working hours that did not fit in with childcare does not suit a lot of women.
“I hope that I won’t always have to have an all female firm, and we will have true equality in the industry. But right now, we’re not there yet.”
Tucker is This Morning’s resident mortgage expert and she has been to both Number 10 and Number 11 to discuss mortgage policies.
Using her voice to educate people and help improve the mortgage space is something she is very passionate about.
“The new generation that’s coming up really want to understand money. They want to understand mortgages, they want a property and they’re very ambitious. And so we have a duty to educate them.”
This forms part of the exclusive 51 for 51 series FT Adviser is doing with women working in financial services, which will take place each week in the lead-up to International Women’s Day 2026.
The aim of ‘51 for 51’ is to encourage more women to consider financial services as a professional career, and to raise awareness of the varying needs that women have when it comes to wealth.
