It was a simple knock on a car window that changed everything for Julie, a nearly 70-year-old grandmother who had been sleeping rough.
This act of kindness, captured in a viral video, has not only transformed her life but also shone a spotlight on Australia’s hidden homelessness crisis and the desperate need for safe housing.
Julie’s story is one of profound resilience.
She says her life was marred by a toxic relationship, an experience she describes as more harrowing than anyone should ever suffer.

But recently, she found the courage to turn a new leaf, a decision that led her to the precarious existence of sleeping in her car.
Then came the moment that would alter her trajectory.
A young man approached her vehicle, offering a simple service.
“I’m just seeing if I can clean your windows for free,” he said, a gesture of goodwill that brought Julie to tears.
“Oh thank you darling,” she replied, her voice thick with emotion.

This unexpected encounter quickly evolved into a candid conversation about her plight.
The young man, visibly concerned, noted the scorching Australian heat.
“Oh my gosh, it’s so hot though! Tomorrow is like 47 (degrees),” he exclaimed as Julie bravely shared her past and wish for the future.
“I’m not a bad person; I just want to be happy and just have somewhere where I can call home.”
It was then revealed that the good Samaritan was none other than Australian influencer and mental health activist, Samuel Weidenhofer.
Indeed, his presence was no accident; he had been contacted by Julie’s daughter, who had desperately sought help for her mother.
Without hesitation, Weidenhofer handed Julie $500 for a room, promising to launch a GoFundMe page to secure her a permanent home.
“So that you don’t have to sleep in this car another night,” he assured her.

While Julie’s current living situation remains private, the GoFundMe campaign has been met with an outpouring of support, raising an incredible $178,996 since the start of the year.
Her story is also a powerful example of a much larger, often unseen, national crisis.
Devastating reports highlight a widespread housing crisis, where unaffordability and hidden homelessness are affecting tens of thousands.
Alarmingly, street homelessness accounts for only six per cent of the homeless population.
The vast majority – 94 per cent – are hidden, forced to sleep in cars, couch surf, or rely on precarious shelters, often out of sight and out of mind.
In a proactive response to this escalating crisis, the property sector has launched A Home for All Foundation.

The initiative aims to raise funds and drive meaningful change for those without secure housing.
Christine Mikhael, Advisory Committee Chair for A Home for All Foundation and CEO of LJ Hooker Group, emphasised the industry’s unique position.
“The property industry is uniquely positioned to address the issue of homelessness and housing insecurity,” Ms Mikhael stated.
“Every day we help our clients buy, sell and rent homes and we have a responsibility to help Australians establish a home. Our work is closely linked to the heart of the issue and A Home for All Foundation is an opportunity to support those who really need it.”
Backed by Australia’s leading digital property business REA Group, the Foundation guarantees that every dollar raised will directly benefit homelessness and housing insecurity charitable organisations, with no funds diverted to administrative costs.
