Tyler, Texas, rejects Bitcoin mining data center

Share

A proposal to build a Bitcoin mining data center in Tyler, Texas, has been rejected by local authorities.

The planning and zoning commission of Tyler voted 5-2 yesterday to deny a special use permit for a 1.92-acre land parcel at 1101 and 1105 W. Erwin Street that would allow Bitcoin miner Vulcan Core LLC to construct an 8,090 sq ft (750 sqm) data center.

This would have consisted of one data center building that would have contracted no more than 12MW of electrical capacity. Any additional demand beyond that limit would have required additional approval, according to conditions and standards set out in the special use permit.

Opposition to the facility was fierce, with residents expressing concern about the facility’s potential water use, noise, and proximity to surrounding residents.

But the permit did state that the data center would use a “closed-loop system” as well as “outdoor dry-cooler heat rejection,” with no diesel generators or on-site combustion equipment.

DCD has reached out to Vulcan Core LLC for comment.

Tyler is located in eastern Texas, around 100 miles (160km) west of Dallas. It is not a major data center hotspot.

Barrio Energy operates a 12MW facility in downtown Tyler, which it bought back in August 2024.
