NatWest said it has continued to see low levels of defaults across its loan portfolio and that net lending increased overall.

Within the retail banking arm, net interest margins were a little lower compared to the fourth quarter of last year, mostly due to competition in the mortgage market.

That was offset, however, by “increasing” benefits from the group’s structural hedge — the mechanism by which banks create a stable stream of income designed to smooth out bumps in lending margins.
