Islam Makhachev vs Jon Jones: Georges St Pierre reveals his UFC pound-for-pound number one
While the UFC is home to many a talented competitor, two men stand out from the pack as the greatest fighters the company has to offer.
In one corner, stands Islam Makhachev, a remarkable athlete who’s utilized his phenomenal sambo skills and ferocious engine to destroy the lightweight division, recently proving his class once again with a destructive victory over Dustin Poirier.
And in the other is Jon Jones, a bonafide legend, with stunning creativity and a body of work so impressive it blows everyone else out of the water.
Therefore, with two such fantastic competitors, it comes as no surprise that everyone has their own opinion on which of the two icons comes out on top.
Many favor the current run of form Makhachev is on, with the active lightweight champion, causing mayhem over the last few years, with excellent wins over Alexander Volkanovski and Charles Oliveira.
However, while Jones hasn’t fought as regularly, hardcore fans will always look back fondly on his old-school spinning elbow attacks and his war with Alexander Gustafsson.
Ultimately, with only one man able to claim the crown, Georges St-Pierre has come forward to give his stance, opting for the Russian as his pound-for-pound number one.
The Hall of Famer told: MMAFighting: “I think right now he’s the best pound-for-pound because of his last few performances. Just amazing. An amazing showcase of heart, too, because he had a bad cut on his forehead, and Poirier gave him a tough time.
“He pushed the pace to the edge, and I think that that fight is going to make Makhachev even better because these are the fights that make you grow.”
Interestingly enough, St Pierre once had the opportunity to go head-to-head with Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, but chose to walk away from the sport instead. However, he was recently called out for a return to the octagon for a match-up with one of the most popular fighters to have ever walked the face of the Earth.
Nick Diaz wanted to fight Georges St Pierre at UFC Abu Dhabi
On August 3, Nick Diaz will make his eagerly-anticipated comeback against Vicente Luque in a fight that fans won’t want to miss.
While the Stockton native didn’t look his usual self in his rematch with Robbie Lawler, his reputation among the fans is enough to maintain interest in his upcoming bout.
After all, this is a man who once lay down in the cage in the middle of a competitive fight against Anderson Silva. He could literally do anything when he’s in there.
However, while the collision with Luque is bound to make for a juicy encounter, his preference was a rematch with St Pierre. And that’s not the only big name he had in mind, with Ariel Helwani revealing a plethora of high-profile fighters the legend requested.
