National currency of Kyrgyzstan marks 31 years

AKIPRESS.COM – May 10 marks 31 years since introduction of the own national currency – som – by Kyrgyzstan, the symbol of sovereign state, the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan said.

“This historic for independent state event has become start of implementation of own monetary policy and served as a basis for development of the national payment and banking system,” the National Bank said.

Despite geopolitical shocks, the Kyrgyz som remains one of the most stable currencies in the region for many years. 

The international conference on occasion of the 30th anniversary of introduction of Kygyz som was held in Ala Archa State Residence on May 19, 2023.

The short film about Kyrgyz som impressed Chair of Russian Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina.

Elvira Nabiullina said: “The National Bank has prepared a remarkable film about the national currency, which reminded what complex work needed to be done to introduce it. Introduction of the national currency is one thing and its support is another thing. You did a great job!”
