Engineering alliance to deliver £2.8bn South West Water investment
South West Water has appointed an alliance of engineering contractors, consultants and designers to deliver £2.8bn worth of upgrades to its infrastructure over the next five years.
The alliance known as “amplify” comprises contractors Bam Nuttall, Clancy, Mott McDonald Bentley, Tilbury Douglas, MWH Treatment and Network Plus Envolve, as well as consultancy organisations Stantec, Long O Donnell, and Turner & Townsend that will provide project management.
It also includes designers Aecom, Arcadis, Pell Frischmann, Stantec and WSP.
The alliance of engineering companies will work on South West Water’s major infrastructure plan for 2025-2030. This covers upgrades to the company’s water infrastructure across Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly and parts of Dorset and Somerset.
The programme may include elements of ground engineering works such as pilling, earthworks and groundwater management.
The upgrades are intended to help South West Water reduce the use of storm overflows, maintain the region’s bathing waters and strengthen water resilience in the face of climate change.
South West Water, along with its delivery partners, will be responsible for the delivery of works, while specialist sub-contractors may be required to deliver specific aspects of the programme.
The “amplify” alliance have already started working on projects as part of the investment programme.
South West Water’s chief executive Susan Davy said: “I’m delighted to introduce amplify, which will turn our record planned investment of £2.8bn in the region into reality for customers and communities.
“We’re already tackling the challenges customers care about most, and by working with our supply chain partners, we will also be creating jobs and supporting the local economy across the Greater South West.”
Bam executive director Huw Jones said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a major partner in the South West Water Alliance to help deliver such a significant programme of infrastructure improvements. We look forward to supporting South West Water to deliver this vital programme of investment that will benefit millions of people across the South West by improving water quality, reducing pollution and delivering a sustainable environment.
“This portfolio of work wholly aligns with our commitment to build a sustainable tomorrow, as we look to support South West Water on their journey to net zero, whilst leaving a lasting legacy for communities across the South West.”
