France’s TF1 Group has pledged to up its spend on animated content for young audiences as part of a new deal signed and announced at Annecy today with several trade orgs representing French producers and distributors (SACD, Scam, SATEV, AnimFrance, SPECT, SPI, USPA and SEDPA).
The terms of the agreement stipulate that starting in 2025, TF1 will increase its funding contribution to original French or European animation from 5.2% to 6% of a project’s overall production budget.
The broadcaster is also planning to ramp up the volume of children’s programming on its free-to-air TFX network next year to 300 hours (including 200 hours of animation), which is nearly double the current total of 150 hours.
Besides providing a leg up to the French animation industry, the deal also promises a “significant improvement” to the rights that TF1 is granted for animated projects it invests in, but no specific details have been shared.
TF1 and new streamer TF1+ carry popular kids shows such as Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (pictured) and PAW Patrol. The regional streamer debuted domestically in January, but international expansion plans are on the horizon.
