Stock Market LIVE: Sensex sinks 600 pts, BSE SmallCap plunges 4%; NTPC 5% | News on Markets
Stock market live updates: Equity benchmark indices erased early gains on Wednesday to stage a sharp plunge. The BSE Sensex fell nearly 500 points to the day’s low after starting 250 points higher. The Nifty50 tumbled 200 points to 22,136.
ITC jumped 6 per cent, leading gains on the Sensex after BAT said it would sell 3.5 per cent stake in the company today via block deals. Other Sensex gainers included Nestle, TCS, Wipro and HDFC Bank.
On the flip side, NTPC, Power Grid, ONGC, Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel and Sun Pharma were among the frontline losers. Among others, Jet Airways hit the 5 per cent upper circuit after NCLAT approved the transfer of its ownership to Jalan Kalrock Consortium.
The BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices also saw aggravated selling, slumping up to 3 per cent.
Nifty Metal and Oil & Gas indices were down 1 per cent each. Nifty FMCG, meanwhile, held highest gains of over 1.5 per cent.
