Gordon Brown has been spotted leaving No10 as Keir Starmer invites in Labour big beasts following the 2026 Local Elections.

The former Prime Minister was appointed as a special envoy on global finance as part of Sir Keir’s reset.

Downing Street confirmed Sir Keir is looking to boost the country’s security and resilience, adding: “Gordon Brown will advise on how global finance can help to achieve this.”

No10 insisted: “As part of the role he will engage with international leaders and finance institutions as well as private finance partners to establish multilateral finance mechanisms.”

Mr Brown’s new role will be unpaid and part-time, with the former Prime Minister reporting directly to Sir Keir.

The job will be focused on forging new international finance partnerships to support defence and security-related investment.

This will also include measures that underpin the UK’s relationship with Europe.

Mr Brown served as Chancellor under Tony Blair for a decade before succeeding him as Prime Minister in 2007.

He oversaw Britain’s initial response to the global financial crisis and bank bailouts.

A key figure in the New Labour project, Mr Brown was credited with granting the Bank of England independence and expanding public spending.

After just under three years in Downing Street, the Scotsman lost the 2010 General Election to the Conservative Party, which was led by David Cameron, following a coalition deal with Nick Clegg’s Liberal Democrats.

Mr Brown has generally been an ally to Sir Keir, backing him for the Labour leadership in 2020 and praising him as “a man of integrity”.

However, he was intesley critical of the Prime Minister for being “too slow” to address the Lord Mandelson scandal.

The former Chancellor warned the Labour Party “must clean up or pay a heavy price”.

Reacting to the news of Mr Brown’s new appointment, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: “An unpopular Prime Minister who lost a general election is now seen by Starmer as being the saviour. Labour are doomed.

Reform’s economics spokesman Robert Jenrick added: “Genius. Bring back the guy who gave away our gold reserves to advise on ‘economic resilience’. What could possibly go wrong?”

As part of his Cabinet shakeup, Sir Keir also appointed Harriet Harman as the adviser on women and girls in a Cabinet revamp.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Keir Starmer said yesterday he would set out the next steps in his plan to build a stronger and fairer Britain in the coming days.

“Today he has appointed Harriet Harman as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Women and Girls.

“The PM committed to do more to eradicate structural misogyny and achieve a cultural change. This appointment will help to accelerate progress.”
