The ruling Progressive Bulgaria coalition has submitted three draft parliamentary decisions requesting the National Audit Office to conduct audits of public finance management covering the period from 2020 to May 2026. According to Konstantin Prodanov, Chair of the Parliamentary Budget Committee, the aim is to obtain an independent assessment of the state of the country’s public finances.
The first audit is expected to examine how legislative changes introduced since 2020 have affected state revenues, expenditures and the budget deficit, as well as why the increase in public spending was not matched by higher revenues.
The second audit will focus on the State Social Security Fund.
The third audit will review the management of the National Road Infrastructure Agency. According to Progressive Bulgaria, preliminary data indicate that the agency has more than €1.5 billion in unpaid, uninvoiced and unaccounted-for certificates for completed works.
The audits are expected to be completed by 30 September. If any violations are identified, the findings will be forwarded to the competent authorities, BNR reporter Maria Fileva reports.
