Inside Jimmy Barnes’ multimillion-dollar real estate moves

Share

Australian music icon Jimmy Barnes has built a massive $20m fortune, transforming decades of rock stardom into an impressive real estate portfolio across New South Wales.

At 17, the singer left a troubled home to join Cold Chisel, helping turn them into one of Australia’s biggest rock bands.

Following 14 Top 40 albums with the band, the musician launched a solo career that delivered 13 number-one ARIA albums.

Beyond music, the 70-year-old rocker has traded multimillion-dollar residential compounds, industrial warehouses, and country sanctuaries alongside his wife, Jane.

Here is a look inside Barnes’ property portfolio and his unique family tree.

“Riverbend”, Berrima

The couple’s primary residence is “Riverbend”, a sprawling estate on the Wingecarribee River near Berrima in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Purchased for $1.85m in 2008, the property features three sandstone pavilions linked by long verandas, an extensive vegetable patch, and a rose garden where Barnes took up gardening during 2020 lockdowns.

The sanctuary inspired their collaborative book, Seasons Where The River Bends.

The Botany Warehouses, Sydney

In 2021, Barnes listed his chic industrial warehouse compound in Botany for more than $4m.

Originally purchased in 2004, the Daphne Street property featured six-metre ceilings and a recording studio where the Jane Barnes Band was formed.

The couple also owned and sold two adjoining investment warehouses on Daniel Street.

The “White House”, Mittagong

During the 1980s and early 1990s, the family lived in a grand white mansion on Mount Gibraltar in Mittagong.

The estate boasted an entertainment wing, tennis court, swimming pool, and a $750,000 recording studio.

They sold the property for $1.41m in 1994 when relocating temporarily to France.

Elizabeth, Adelaide Childhood Home

Before acquiring multimillion-dollar estates, Barnes grew up in a working-class home in Elizabeth, South Australia.

The neighbourhood shaped his early life and inspired his best-selling autobiography and solo album, Working Class Man.

Jimmy Barnes’ Family

Barnes is a father to eight children and shares a unique, close-knit family dynamic with his wife, Jane.

He shares four children with Jane: Mahalia, Eliza-Jane, Jackie, and Elly-May.

Barnes also has four children from other relationships.

David Campbell

Born when Barnes was 16, Campbell was raised by his maternal grandmother, Joan, believing her to be his mother.

Campbell discovered at age 10 that his “sister” was his mother and “family friend” the musician was his father.

Speaking on ABC Radio’s Conversations, the musician gave insight into what it was like for him when Campbell was a baby.

“David came along, he was born, and it was decided that her mother was going to adopt David, and she brought him up, I wasn’t capable of doing it anyways, I was 16, I was completely out of control,” he admitted.

“By the time I was ready to really be a parent was many, many, years later.

“But I always knew I had a son, and I would go and visit, I wasn’t allowed to say I was his dad because the grandmother just wanted to protect him, I guess, but it was really difficult.”

The pair have since reunited and perform together regularly.

Amanda Bennett and Megan Torzyn

In 2010, two women in their mid-30s contacted Barnes regarding paternity. DNA tests confirmed both were his biological daughters.

Interestingly, Bennett was born in the same year as Barnes’ other son David Campbell.

Both Barnes and his wife have welcomed the two new family members.

“My kids are all so great that when I found out there were a couple more, I felt they would be good people, and they’re lovely girls,” he said.

In December 2024, Barnes publicly acknowledged his daughter Katy Lee Carroll, a Coffs Harbour-based real estate agent.

The singer discovered he had a daughter five years earlier, opting to protect her privacy until relentless anonymous phone calls forced the family to issue a statement.

“Christmas is all about family and we would like to introduce my daughter Katy Lee, who has been in our lives for the past five years,” Barnes said.

“Since discovering that I was her biological father, our family and extended family have loved getting to know her.”

Carroll confirmed she had been embraced by the Barnes family with “love, warmth and incredible understanding”, asking for privacy as they continue to build their bond.
