Share

Abay Bank has launched the Abay Classic International Prepaid Visa Card, expanding its digital banking services and enabling customers to make secure international payments without carrying cash.

The card, introduced in partnership with Visa, allows customers to make payments at ATMs and point-of-sale (POS) terminals worldwide, as well as conduct online purchases on international e-commerce platforms.

Speaking during the launch ceremony at the bank’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Abay Bank Chief Executive Officer Yehuala Gessesse said the prepaid card is designed to support a wide range of users, including businesses making payments to overseas suppliers, travelers, and individuals accessing global digital services. He said the initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to advancing digital financial services and improving customer convenience.

Visa’s Cluster Head for Eastern Africa and Country Manager for Ethiopia, Yared Endale, said digital payments play a critical role in economic growth and financial inclusion. He noted that Visa has established a local office in Ethiopia as part of its African network and said the partnership with Abay Bank is expected to expand access to international financial services and strengthen the country’s digital payments ecosystem.

Abay Bank currently operates 370 ATMs and 400 POS terminals, alongside internet and mobile banking services. The introduction of the international prepaid Visa card adds to the bank’s digital offerings as Ethiopia continues to expand access to modern payment solutions.
