Heavy rain triggers crop loss and property damage across Kollam district in Kerala

Crop loss across the district on Tuesday has been estimated at ₹17.05 lakh after heavy rain caused widespread devastation to the agricultural sector, damaging 5.31 hectares of farmland and impacting 163 farmers. In addition to the agricultural damage, severe rainfall resulted in partial destruction of a home, causing a loss of ₹10,000.

The agricultural damage varied significantly across different block panchayats in the district. Vettikavala registered the largest extent of affected farmland, with 31 farmers suffering losses over 2.60 hectares valued at ₹3.01 lakh. Meanwhile, Chadayamangalam reported the highest monetary loss, amounting to ₹5.67 lakh, affecting 44 farmers across 1.80 hectares.

In Punalur, 10 farmers experienced severe crop damage covering 0.33 hectares, incurring a loss of ₹4 lakh. Anchal block reported losses worth ₹3.23 lakh, affecting 38 farmers across 0.31 hectares. Eravipuram recorded ₹1.05 lakh in losses affecting 35 farmers over .07 hectares, while Chathannoor saw minor damage amounting to ₹9,000 across 0.20 hectares.
