Account take-overs sees biggest increase

Identity fraud linked to mortgage applications has risen by more than a third (36%) in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to Cifas’ latest six-month Fraudscape report update.

34 cases were reported by its members, up from 25 for the same period last year. Meanwhile, the number of account take-over cases reported by Cifas members in relation to a mortgage has risen from just 1 in the first half of 2025 to 27 for the first half of 2026.

The number of misuse of mortgage facility cases has tripled from 3 to 9, while false applications for a mortgage have also risen, up 4% to 691 cases.

‘A worrying trend’

David Jones, CEO of Click2Check, said: “The latest Cifas fraud figures highlight a worrying trend for the property market, with mortgage fraud increasing across every category. While the numbers remain relatively small, the rate of growth demonstrates how quickly fraudsters are adapting their tactics.

“These figures reinforce the need for robust identity verification at every stage of the mortgage and homebuying process. Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using stolen or fake identities and compromised accounts to target lenders, intermediaries and consumers alike. Organisations can no longer rely on traditional document checks alone.

“For the property sector, preventing fraud is about more than protecting lenders – it’s about safeguarding buyers, sellers and the integrity of the entire transaction.”
