Christian Fiscal approves leaving property tax rate the same, while tangible rate decreases

It was a full agenda at Tuesday’s Christian Fiscal Court meeting, as magistrates approved leaving numerous tax rates the same as last year’s, while one tax rate was reduced.

The tax rate that saw a reduction—as approved on first-reading—was the tangible property rate, which went from 18.7 cents to 18.1 cents per $100 of assessed value, while the real estate property tax rate will remain at 16.7 cents per $100 of assessed value, as recommended by Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam.

The tax rate on motor vehicles and watercraft would then remain at 11.6 cents, unchanged from the prior year. The rates were approved unanimously, and there will be a public hearing set to discuss those rates before being read for a second time.

In other action, magistrates approved a recommendation from the Road Committee to not use the available Flex Funds from Rural and Secondary Road Program for state projects but to instead keep that money for use on county road projects.

It was approved unanimously, with magistrates saying the hope is to keep county roads from falling behind schedule.  There was also much discussion regarding the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in District 2, with some magistrates expressing frustration in what they call a lack of transparency and communication regarding local projects.

Magistrates also heard a monthly and yearly report from the Christian County Regional Animal Shelter, with Erica Miller reading the report on behalf of Director Sherry Viall. Miller says during the month of June, the regional shelter took in 538 animals and there were 152 outgoing animals.

In the yearly report, it showed that the shelter took in 4,577 animals in the fiscal year.

Magistrates also approved a litter abatement grant application and approval of an illegal open dump cleanup grant application.
