European stocks drift higher as crude collapse offsets hawkish ECB rate warnings By Investing.com

Share

Investing.com – European equities pushed modestly higher on Wednesday, holding near one-week highs as a sharp slump in crude prices provided macro relief, even as continental trading desks weighed hawkish central bank warnings and adopted a cautious posture ahead of a pivotal earnings release from U.S. chip giant

The pan-European inched up 0.11%. Germany’s and France’s drifted sideways, while London’s commodity-heavy was constrained by falling energy shares.

Global benchmark fell 2.6% to $86.32 a barrel, extending a punishing 5% selloff from the prior session.

The tumble came after media reports cited regional mediators indicating that the U.S. and Iran were close to an interim ceasefire agreement that includes guarantees for unhindered commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Sentiment was further bolstered by official statements from Iran and Oman confirming they had resumed bilateral discussions aimed at fully reopening the vital shipping conduit.

Schnabel warns rates must rise further as inflation risks persist

In an interview with Bloomberg News published on Wednesday, European Central Bank Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel warned that borrowing costs will need to rise further to tame stubborn price pressures, explicitly stating that “at the current policy rate, inflation is unlikely to return to target over the medium term, and therefore further tightening will be necessary.”

Schnabel highlighted that the lingering conflict in the Middle East – combined with unexpected resilience across the broader euro-area economy – continues to pose significant upside risks to consumer prices. Her comments reinforce growing money-market expectations that the ECB may deliver another 25-basis-point rate hike in September.

The Nvidia catalyst

Beyond the central bank crosswinds, broader equity momentum remained tightly capped as institutional desks braced for Nvidia’s second-quarter earnings report after the U.S. market close. The AI-bellwether’s quarterly report represents the single most important microeconomic litmus test for global equity markets, carrying direct ramifications for European exchanges.

A strong print is critical to sustaining valuations across Europe’s domestic tech ecosystem, where key continental suppliers – including chip-equipment titan , semiconductor manufacturers like and , and industrial automation firms – rely heavily on sustained global AI hardware demand to drive their own order books.

Trading desks are simultaneously maintaining a defensive stance ahead of incoming U.S. PCE, looking for final clues on inflation and growth before central bankers gather at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium.
