HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs Update Yuan Forecasts on Export Strength and Yuan Internationalization – News and Statistics

A group of international financial institutions has recently increased their projections for the Chinese yuan, according to a Reuters report published on Monday.

The currency has strengthened this year, gaining nearly 3 percent against the U.S. dollar and approximately 2.6 percent versus its major trading counterparts.

HSBC has raised its year-end forecast for the yuan, now expecting it to reach 6.65 per dollar, up from a previous estimate of 6.75. Analysts at HSBC cited China’s highly competitive exports, along with structural factors such as yuan internationalization, long-term diversification away from the U.S. dollar, and economic rebalancing, as key supports. They also noted that U.S.-China economic relations have become more stable and constructive since May 2025.

Deutsche Bank economists predicted that strong Chinese import growth this year could lead to further yuan gains. They suggested that a surge in imports of upstream products could be followed by an increase in export orders, a recovery in domestic demand, or both. Deutsche Bank’s new baseline forecast calls for the yuan to strengthen to 6.55 per dollar by the end of 2026, compared to an earlier forecast of 6.7.

Goldman Sachs sees potential for further and more enduring yuan strength, driven by an unprecedented external surplus and robust export competitiveness. Despite headwinds from the Iran war and higher energy costs, the U.S. bank maintained a positive medium-term outlook, supported by expected global investment in energy security and renewables, which would likely benefit Chinese exports. Goldman Sachs now expects the yuan to reach 6.80, 6.70, and 6.50 per dollar in three, six, and twelve months respectively, up from its previous targets of 6.85, 6.80, and 6.70.
